The Washington Commanders Moving to...Washington?

    Since 1932, the Commanders, formerly the Redskins, have represented Washington D.C in the NFL. However, for almost thirty years, they have called Maryland home. The Northwest Stadium is five miles east of DC, and was built in 1997 to house the team. For most, only one downside to the venue glares-it’s not RFK.     
    In our current political climate, RFK may conjure a different image than in decades past. Actually, the late sports stadium atop 180 acres of Washington real estate was initially called Washington Stadium, only to be renamed in honor of Robert F. Kennedy (senior) in 1969. Formerly home to the Washington Redskins, Washington Senators, and DC United, RFK Stadium has a fabled history; the promising era of Jayden Daniels’ Commanders today pales in comparison to the RFK stadium Redskin’s domination in the 1980s and 90s. Its glory days are long over though, and for the past couple of years it has remained empty, the swampy DC environment slowly overtaking the deteriorating stone structure.      
    Given its sprawling location along the banks of Anacostia, many in DC have protested the stadium’s neglect. Unfortunately, the property is federal land, impeding on possible revitalization projects and acting as yet another reminder of District legislators’ lack of autonomy. In this way, the crumbling arena is a symbol of DC’s ongoing fight against federal obtrusion.  Take the property as a sign of hope though, because late last December, Congress finally handed RFK over, in many ways thanks to the political savvy of mayor Muriel Bowser, who, through conversations and commitments with many congresspeople, ensured the passing of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act.     
    With the 180 acres finally in local hands, Mayor Bowser handed decision-making to the DC council, who struggled with the best use of the land. While most wanted to bring the Commanders back to home turf, some were concerned that building a new stadium would take away from opportunities to build low-income housing and build more public recreational facilities in DC. This was an especially worthwhile debate considering the arena’s location in Southeast DC, which has long faced poverty and a lack of resources and infrastructure. Ultimately, the council agreed to return the Commanders to RFK, with the terms that 6,000 new homes and a large youth sports facility are to be built and indigenous trees preserved.     
    Finally, the Commanders return to Washington! Many longtime fans celebrate this as a return to their “spiritual home”. The franchise itself is in a significant period of change: the name change from Redskins to Washington Football Team to Commanders has not been well received by everyone, especially not lifelong fans, but the team’s excellent recent season has restored any doubts. Politically, the revitalization of the RFK property signifies the strong reasoning, positive decision-making, and determination of the local DC government. The federal government’s release of RFK allowed council members to formulate conditions with the Commanders based on their wards’ needs and priorities. For example, council member Wendell Felder (Ward-7) amended the deal with the Commanders to direct a portion of funds from the project to rental assistance and small business loans for low-income areas in Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8. He was always a supporter of the new stadium, but the agency of the council in the deal allowed him to also provide for his ward and other underfunded wards. Therefore, the RFK stadium deal is a big win for DC as an independent body and exciting for all Washington fans as the Commanders head into another promising season. However, the effort and persistence needed from DC legislators to even obtain the rights to the RFK property signifies the still limited and constrained independence of the District.
