Interview with Lily D’Amato
When did you start singing?
I started writing songs on the playground when I was in fourth grade.
So, when you were on that playground, what compelled you to start writing songs?
I think that me writing songs, it’s just the way that I process my life- the things around me and the way that I was feeling.
Why did you sing “Sandcastles” today?
I love Beyonce. I don’t know- [Sandcastles] is an extremely emotional song, and one that I think that at some point or another, everyone resonates with.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Probably like being around people who accept you, and feeling like you are in a place when- for me, it would be somewhere I can be really creative.
Where have you found that before?
Well, as everyone knows I love to talk about it, I went to the Berkeley College of Music this summer, and the people that I met there were just- I feel like I don’t get my daily dose of people in my life, and people are weird. So, it was just like really nice to be in a place where you could be just completely yourself and not have to worry about anything.
What is your greatest fear?
Ooh- this is actually something I think about a lot. My greatest fear is normalcy, like having a boring, normal life, doing what everyone else is doing.
Which living person do you most admire?
This sounds really cheesy, and I’m sure a lot of people say this, but my dad. [Why?] My dad didn’t go to college, and he had a different upbringing that a lot of us are used to. He managed to give me everything that I could ever want. He’s just a wise person and I admire him.
Star Trek or Star Wars?
Star wars. That’s kind of embarrassing that you asked that. [Who would pick Star Wars?!] Who would pick Star Trek? Are you kidding; that’s the Walmart Version of Star Wars.
Overrated or Underrated: Chicken and Rice?
Oh my god, overrated. Actually, underrated, because people complain about it a lot, but I always enjoy it.
Any life mottos?
Don’t judge other people for sinning differently than you.
